Neighborhood Profile: Del Ray


Founded in 1894 as a planned community, Del Ray is situated northwest of Old Town Alexandria as one of several smaller neighborhoods including Hume, Saint Elmo, Mt. Ida, and Warwick Village. Today the entire area is known colloquially as Del Ray and is bounded to the east by Jefferson Davis Highway, the west by Russell Road, the north by Glebe Road, and to the south by Braddock Road.

Life in Del Ray

Since the late 90s, Del Ray has experienced significant revitalization becoming one of the DC Area’s most sought after communities because of it’s unique mix of quiet suburban charm with vibrant urban convenienceScreen Shot 2015-02-20 at 4.24.52 PM (2). Quiet tree lined streets surround “The Avenue” with its dozens of shops and restaurants. Meanwhile, the community’s social calendar remains robust all year long. Some of the many great events include The Heart of Del Ray, First Thursdays, Art on the Avenue, the Halloween Parade, Thanksgiving “Turkey Trot,” Holiday Tree Lighting, and the year round Del Ray Farmer’s Market.

Those seeking an active lifestyle, will find it all in Del Ray. Recreational opportunities abound including near direct access to the Potomac River as well as the Mount Vernon, Four Mile Run, and Washington & Old Dominion biking and jogging trails. The neighborhood also boasts 5 public parks, so there is always a place to play just around the corner.

Getting Around

While Del Ray does not have a proper metro station, the Braddock Road and proposed Potomac Yards Stations lie just outside its borders. Driving, Metro Bus, or walking remain the staples of transportation in the community.

Del Ray Community Events

First Thursdays – a series of free outdoor street festivals along Mount Vernon Avenue every first Thursday in the months of May, June, July, August, and September.

Art on the Avenue – an outdoor street festival the first Saturday in October featuring hundreds of artists, live music, and food vendors.

Halloween Parade – occurs annually on the Sunday before Halloween and features awards for best pet costume and best decorated business, home, and stroller.

Del Ray Farmers Market – year round Saturday market at the intersection of Mount Vernon Ave and Oxford Ave.
